Alsbury / Allsbury / Alesbury / Aylesbury Family History
- Though originally just curious about my own immediate ancestry,
my energies were focused to do more by the chiding remark of a cousin
of my grandfather: "You don't want to do that!" I believe
that I now know the reason behind "Auntie Em"'s remark, but thats another
story as they say...
- The research I have pursued, more recently with considerable
co-operation from others, has included all identifiable branches
of the family with ALL spelling variants; though sadly I concede
that there will always be some gaps in information... (I've much
yet to forgive those who caused damage to records stored in Bristol
in the riots of the 1830's!) There is good evidence for some sort of
link between most occurences of the name and its variants - if you
go back far enough!
- The sources I have accessed over some twenty or more years have
yielded a great deal of information about the name in the UK from
c1200 to the present day. Recent contacts with family members in
the USA have yielded plentiful detail of the various branches of
the family - some of which have been there since before 1750. Most
recent developments include information about Australian connections -
and some perplexing 'strays' such as in the West Indies in the C19.
- One delight has been the development of contacts between the
members of the three main branches of the family in the UK. Letters,
phone calls and E-mail have been exchanged - but of particular
significance was the 'tour' which Roy Alsbury (of the 'Bucklebury'
branch) was able to make in August 1996, during which he called on
Jenny Elliott (nee Alsbury of the 'Weston Zoyland' branch) and
then in the same week came to see us in Kettering (of the 'Corston'
branch)...
- The photo records this historic meeting - Roy on the left, myself
on the right - we are certainly no closer than 8th cousins - I think
its at least 10th. As I have no first or second Alsbury cousins,
and had not met any of the more distant ones, Roy counts as the closest
I've yet met!
