There are a number of those included in the Social Security and Telephone records whom I have not related to the above - further research is still needed as regards these and other branches of the family.
How may this family relate to the family of Charles Alsbury (1771-1858) ?
Consider the following:
-
David or John David Alsbury born c 1825-30 site unknown. The name David supplied by LeRoy Allsbury of St Joseph MO as being his father's (Elza LeRoy) recollection of E.L's grandfather's name. The same source gives David's wife as Nancy nee Paden, and E.L's uncles as including Bill, Charles and Tom. N.B.:- E.L's father was named John David.
- Bill, Charles, Tom and John David are all included in the information from Raymond Allsbury of Carthage MO, with details of births and deaths. Their parents are given as Newton and Lucinda. Raymond also reports hearing something about this couple and being brother and sister, which is unconfirmed - and impossible given their alleged dates of birth!
- Lucinda and Newton are listed, with the relevant children on the 1870 Census for Hancock County IL, and in the records of local Baptist churches between 1862 and 1871.
- From LeRoy Allsbury's information we have David born in 1825, married to Nancy Paden before 1851. According to Helen Renner they had a son born on 5Feb1856 near Carthage in Hancock County IL. Mary died near Gravette AR.
- The various oral traditions handed down in these branches of the family are consistent with links to the original Virginia Alsbury's.
- Thomas Alsbury, probable son of Charles (II), is listed on the 1830 Census of Morgan IN. The children listed by Helen Renner match the details given in the census records with the omission of one male aged 0-5 at the time of the census. The dates of birth of the other children force this child's date of birth to be between January 1824 and December 1828. There is also an age gap between the daughter Elizabeth b1829 and the son Levi b1835 in which it would be possible to locate another child born in IN or IL.
- On the evidence available John David (b1825) and Newton (b1832) could well be the additional children of Thomas born in the periods indicated.
- Thomas Jefferson's birth is given as 5Feb1856 by H.R. and as 7Feb1856 by Sidney Robert. Is there a real co-incidence with the date of birth for the son of David and Nancy ? The newspaper clipping giving details of T.J.'s 52yrs of marriage has to have been written in 1933 (for the 20th October to be a Friday), and yet it gives his age as 76.
At the most extreme - is T.J. that son brought up by parents' brother and sister-in-law (hence the hearsay above) ? - could this be linked to the lack of information about David and Nancy (did they die young ?) - or are there two sons born to brothers on or about the same time who are quite distinct individuals. If this latter option is true, how did the LeRoy tradition evolve ?
I am inclined to believe that it comes from the circumstance detailed below, where, in the family of which I believe John David and Newton were part, brother and sisters married brothers and sister from the STUFFLEBEAM family. Indeed, I am inclined to use the confused memory of brother and sister married as evidence that they were children of Thomas.
- Thus, in view of the more detailed tradition with dates etc from Raymond's side of the family, which descends from T.J. directly, I believe that the weight of evidence at present is to accept the household as per his evidence and the census of 1870 as being children of Newton and Lucinda.
At the same time, in the light of the above, I believe that we may presume to work on the basis that John David (b1825) and Newton (b1832) were members of the family of Thomas, son of Charles Alsbury
There is a tabulation in Helen Renner's volume of the 1820 Census for Gallia County, Ohio and of the possible children of Charles(II) Alsbury. Given that the David(John) in that table is the John David whom we now conjecture to be a son of Thomas, rather than a brother, it is worth considering which others in the list may fit elsewhere.
It is apparent that a few difficulties arise in relating the census record to the possible names. First we note that there are five females born between 1810 and 1820 who we have no names for.
As by 1820 Elizabeth was already married, and Sarah may well have been in Virginia where she was to marry the next year, I am confident that the rest of the female side fits together well.
Thomas and Charles(III) were also married by 1820, so the problems focus on the male child born between 1810 and 1820 according to the census, for which we have three possible names.
Of the three there is only convincing evidence for Alexander being a son of Charles(II). Given the doubts outlined by Helen Renner in her work, I believe that we should assume that Rev Charles Alsbury and Henry Alsbury belong elsewhere in the family - but where?
Another factor to be reckoned with is the figure of 13 children given for the size of Charles(II)'s family. With our assumption that Rev Charles and Henry are not to be counted there remain still some 16 children. It may be that 3 of the 5 females aged under 10 in 1820 did not live to adulthood - this would be consistent with our lack of names for these individuals.
The two principal lines of descent known are through Charles (1771-1858) and his probable brother Thomas Jr from whom the Texas Alsbury's originate. These are known not to have been the only members of their generation (cf H.R. p224) and I am, at present, moved to suggest that Rev Charles and Henry are sons of at least one other member of that generation, as yet unidentified.
In support of this suggestion I argue, by process of elimination, that there is no place in the known families into which they readily fit.
We have already indicated that they are not likely to be sons of Charles Alsbury. The summary of the family of Thomas Alsbury Jr in Helen Renner's work also leaves no room for them. The remaining known possibilities to consider are that they fit in the families of sons of Charles(II), but none of these; Charles, John or Thomas; appear likely in view of the evidence available.
I believe that the answer, if it can be found, may appear if more can be discovered of the family of which Charles Alsbury (1771-1858) and Thomas Jr were part, and of how, if at all, some of the 'stray' Allsbury's noted by Helen Renner (including those born outside the USA) relate to those of whom we know rather more. The Peter, Jonathan, Vincent and William noted by Helen Renner on p224 of her work , and perhaps the Jesse, thus all appear to be individuals whose lives are in need of further exploration.
NOTE:
This is an extract from what is very much a working document rather than a finished one and it depends heavily on the research of Helen Renner to whom I am grateful for letting me have a copy of her published work.
Any information, however small or trivial it may seem, which corrects or helps to confirm the suggestions I make will be welcome.
